The first step is taken before you even leave on your trip. Check with your health insurance to see if they cover you in the country you are visiting. If they don’t, you may want to check into health insurance for travelers that will cover you where you are going or a short-term health insurance plan that will cover you where you will be.

Find a Medical Provider

You may want to find out where the medical providers that can treat you are in the area before you even get sick. An embassy or consulate in the area can provide you with a list. However, if you are already sick, you run the risk of not being able to be seen very quickly.

Find a Translator

Once again, the embassy or consulate in the area can provide you with a list. However, the medical provider in the area may also already have translation services if you are in an area that is popular with tourists or you speak a foreign language that is popular in the area.

Paying for Services

If you don’t have travel insurance, you may have to pay for the services yourself. Or you may have to pay out of pocket and be reimbursed. If either is the case, you will have to pay the provider in their own currency most likely. This means transferring funds to the country where you are from your own and then having them converted to local currency. You can either go to a bank that will allow you to do this quickly or you can ask for help from the embassy or consulate again that can either tell you where this can be done or can have it done for you themselves.

I’m sure that getting sick while in a foreign country is the last thing on your mind when you leave for vacation or any kind of trip. However, you need to take precautions before you leave so that if you are to become sick, you can get the best treatment and prevent having to come home and travel while sick to get care at home. Traveling while sick can only make matters worse. Plus, you want to be able to enjoy your trip and if you get care there, you may be able to do just that.
